I did this last night! It was fabulous! Stay in, have a fire going, lay on the couch with your pillow & a quilt & read books & then sleep on the couch all night. It was heaven. I was reading an Ann Rule book, Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight by Alexandra Fuller, Plan B by Anne Lamott and also Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I tend to read more than 1 book at a time. And I listened to the powerful wind outside and was happy and peaceful all snuggled up by my fire.

nothing hot per se but I just got finished with Middlesex, and am in the middle of Wicked.

Middlesex was a good read

Please let me know what you thought of Wicked when you finish it. I read it a few months ago.

My take on Wicked (short, no spoilers...) I REALLY wanted to love Wicked - in fact it sounded like my kind of book - but I couldn't get past the first chapter or so.... should I have stuck with it?

well, (possible SPOILER) if you didn't like the first chapter then you're not going to like the rest of it. It was strange, somewhat interesting. It reminded me a bit of Animal Farm. Some parts were down right creepy and gruesome. I feel like you do - I so wanted to enjoy it, and I kept turning pages hoping the next chapter would be better. I found the whole tone of the book depressing. There wasn't a single character in the book that I liked, and there's some animal torture described that I found really horrible.

Oh - (discussing that possible spoiler...) I would have really hated it, then. I can't stand anything bad happening to animals, even in fiction. Unless they magiy turn the tables or something, and even then, it bugs me.

You know how some stories dredge up and display the worst of humanity, but then, we somehow redeem ourselves and you leave the book thinking "Yup, we're awful, but there's hope. We can do good things too." Well, that was Wicked... except that there was no redemption. Not only was the Witch awful (but also a product of her circumstances, so you end up feeling sorry for her), but Dorothy was awful, Glinda was awful, and those who were gentle and somewhat good were oppressed and destroyed in a bloodbath/genocide. I'm going to go home and throw that book out. I'll never want to read it again, and I don't want to inflict it on anyone else. (Okay, I'll recycle it.)

Oh, no! (Spoiler?) I just *had* to read the spoilers, didn't I? I'm finding it ALOT like Animal Farm (about x/x through). I'm still feeling some empathy towards Elphaba. I'm looking for some catharsic event to turn her evil, and am having a hard time reconciling the woman she is now (not yet the WWoftheW) with the baby she was - what happened there? Is it ever explained?

great reads... anything by Radclyffe. She was a surgeon in Philly before she retired to write full-time. Many good ramance series books. I can devour one of her books in a couple of days!!
