would you guess it could have been men that were losing the mating + survival game in their days, so they devised this tactic as "romance" to try to better their competitors?

nah, I think writers tend to emote more and male writers wrote about heartbreak, love, etc...I don't think they devised anything...but they tried to express that their emotions and acts of love meant more than $$$ and gifts in order to win the parents of a future betrothed

artists back then weren't even paid half of they're earning now

nope but they were in circles with people with money...well the published ones and their passion paid thru on the page and on canvas and thru music...donors supported them to live most of the time
